Municipal Affairs

Nov.12, 2010
On October 21 we presented at the Waste Management Committee of AH (see previous posting) as a response to the proposed changes in recycling rules. Subsequent to that, a motion was made and approved by the committee to amend the previous changes to allow residents or marina operators to bring recylables to the dumps in either blue boxes or clear bags. This motion was to be valid for a trial period of 6 months beginning January 1, 2011. On November 1, 2010 the new council approved the motion. This essentially returns the recycling practices to what they were previously on the lakes.

What is unsaid, however, is that the success of this trial will be contingent on all parties, residents and marinas, following the township recycling rules. It was because these were not being followed that the changes were originally proposed last September. Early next spring, the Board will be publishing in various ways what the rules are, to remind everyone so that we can continue to use the waste disposal services of our marinas.

On October 21st Terry Beettam attended a meeting of the Addington Highlands Waste Management Committee at the invitation of Reeve Henry Hogg. The meeting was called to deal with the issues around the proposed changes to the recycling rules. Terry was asked to present the LWCA’s position and to suggest any solutions. My position was that asking residents to bring blue boxes to the dumps put undue hardship on water access residents as opposed to road access, and given that our community was approximately 80% water access, we were being unfairly treated. Terry also pointed out that we contribute almost 25% of AH tax revenues.

The preferred solution Terry proposed was to restore the opportunity for marina operators to offer waste services. If this was not acceptable to AH, then we must have both dumps accessible on all Sunday afternoons/evenings.

The meeting was well attended—attendees included both existing councillors, candidates for council as well as the Reeve. At the conclusion of the meeting the committee agreed to explore our proposals and to review their recommendations with the LWCA before proceeding with any changes.

As this process continues through the winter Terry will keep everyone posted.
