Update of the Future 2011-2021 Forest Management around Weslemkoon and Otter Lakes

In the middle of the summer 2010, the MNR provided additional information about the Future 2011-2021 Forest Management Plan.

The MNR provided three brief summary information sheets on the different types of harvest systems used to promote regeneration of trees. Tree species require varying amounts of exposure to sunlight for the saplings to thrive. These systems provide the different amounts of sunlight. The goal is to maintain a diverse forest with different types, age, and health of trees. The systems are selected to best fit the silviculture of the given area. Follow the links and review the systems;

1. Clearcut system – promotes growth of young trees that will not grow in shade, e.g., red pine,
2. Shelterwood system - promotes growth of young trees that require a mix of sun and shade, e.g., white pine and red oak
3. Selection system - promotes growth of trees that require shade to grow, e.g., hard maple

These are proposed harvest areas, the 2011-2021 Forest Management Plan is still being worked on. The LWCA submitted a letter to the MNR asking for clarification as to the logging plans in block 162. We want to make sure the setback from the water is being maintained and the viewscape will not be overly affected. Replies from the MNR and additional details should be available late Oct or early Nov 2010.
