Unauthorized Boat Launch on Mink Lake [Heath Lake]

August 1, 2009

An issue was raised at the AGM that motor boats had been seen earlier that week on Mink Lake [Heath Lake]. The concern was that an unauthorized boat launch had been made on Mink Lake by using a temporary logging road.

We contacted the MNR Forest Manager for the district and reported that we believed an unauthorized boat launch had been made from the temporary logging road to Mink Lake. The MNR said that they would look into the matter.

The MNR reported their findings to the LWCA as follows: An unauthorized trail has been cut from a location to the south-east of Heath Lake which winds for approximately 600 metres through the forest to the shores of the Lake. The Forest Manager’s investigation has revealed that damage to Crown Land has taken place (unauthorized cutting of trees and trail construction) as well as other illegal activities (improper boat storage, alcohol related offences). The photographs, maps and GPS location points have all been provided to the MNR Enforcement Branch and they will continue the investigation into this illegal activity. The Enforcement Branch have the authority to lay charges and levy fines.

The MNR Forest Manager extended a Thank You to the LWCA members for bringing attention to this matter.

Regarding the temporary forest access road at Mink [Heath] Lake, the Forest Manager is reviewing the Road Use Strategy for the area to determine if proper actions were taken to de-commission the road and return it to its original access condition.

The MNR has treated this issue in a very professional matter, responding quickly and keeping LWCA informed. They have promised to keep us updated as the review of the area continues.
